Updated: Jun 18, 2020
Have you ever wondered, why we are feeling sleepy, despite having a cozy last night sleep, or why is our brain dropping a "time-to-bed" sign? It is because of the melatonin, a substance that helps us in improving our sleep quality and duration. By this time you would be inquisitive to know more about the same, right? So stay tuned and find what melatonin does to the body.
Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally in the body. It is produced by the pineal gland, located in the back portion of the third cerebral ventricle of the brain. It also regulates our growth hormone and thus it is responsible for our overall growth of the body. It is a powerful antioxidant. Our body is a smart machine, it determines the sleep and other patterns and time by a unique system, we call it the sleep-wake cycle or circadian cycle, or circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythm is known to regulate our sleep and other daily actions. Melatonin supports eye health, treat stomach ulcers, and heartburns.
When there is dark around, the melatonin becomes active and starts giving a signal to the body that it is time to sleep, melatonin also helps in relaxing the body and mind. In case of brightness, the melatonin does not activate and the body gets a signal to wake up. When our routine gets altered, our circadian cycle gets affected. Here comes the role of a Melatonin supplement. It helps to regulate our sleep cycle. A healthy body needs a sound sleep and a good diet. An increase in basal growth hormone release in a male is due to the administration of an oral supplement of melatonin.
Melatonin helps in improving the condition of an eye disorder known as AMD - Age-related Macular Degeneration. It also works effectively in treating the disorder of Acid Reflux in the body. The best part is it helps in overcoming Seasonal Depression, which is caused by light and sleep pattern changes in the body. Apart from all this, some researchers in a study found that melatonin can be also used in cancer treatment.
Dosages and Timings:-
Generally, Melatonin is considered safe for use in the body, and that is the reason why in man countries it is available without prescriptions. In initial days you can stick to the dosage of 1mg per day around 30 mins before sleep. This amount is considered to be sufficient in majority cases, but if your issue is severe and this amount does not seems to satisfy your need you can use up to 2-5 gms for the purpose, but remember if you are comfortable with lower dose don't exceed the amount. You can consult your health expert to help you with deeper insights.
Side Effects :-
Melatonin does not seem to excite a lot of evils, and almost zero percent general addiction. There are a few common symptoms that you might face, when you overuse the supplement, like nausea, headache, diarrhea, joint pain, depression, uneasiness, and dizziness. One more common issue can exist i.e if you consume a lot of melatonin from external sources your body will slow down the production of melatonin.
The bottom line is to use the supplement, only when required and that too in a measurable and easily absorbed amount, don't overdose or overuse.
